As an architect and civil engineer in Malta, I’ve witnessed too much waste in the construction industry. When developers demolish an old property, they end up throwing away several old architectural elements. Not only is this a loss of heritage, but it becomes a substantial waste of embodied energy. Limestone is very limited in Malta, and any effort to reduce its extraction should be encouraged. By reusing and recycling these elements into new buildings or art projects, we hope to increase their lifespan instead of sending them to a landfill.
