Athens College Junior High School actively participates in the European Week of Waste Reduction (EWWR). The collaborative efforts of the Student Council, the World Explorers Club and the English Department have resulted in the implementation of the following initiatives:

1. On November 23, we are organizing a Bake Sale at the school in celebration of Thanksgiving. This unique event focuses on sustainability, with all students contributing homemade dishes presented in recycled and reused packaging. Additionally, careful consideration is given to ingredient selection, prioritizing locally sourced products to minimize the environmental impact of transportation. The initiative is aptly named “A Green Bake Sale… for a Sustainable World!”.
2. To promote our Green Bake Sale, students have actively engaged in creating promotional materials, including videos, radio spots, and posters. This multimedia approach enhances the visibility and reach of our sustainable event.
3. In support of recycling, we have implemented the use of handmade rubbish bins crafted from recycled cardboard, aligning with the principles of the circular economy.
4. Post-event, a crucial aspect of our initiative involves the weighing of our waste. This step aims to assess the effectiveness of our waste reduction strategies and provides valuable insights for future sustainability efforts.
5. Demonstrating our commitment to social responsibility, any remaining food from the event will be donated to a charitable cause at the church, contributing to community welfare and minimizing food waste.
6. In summary, Athens College’s participation in EWWR is characterized by a holistic and innovative approach, incorporating sustainable practices, creative communication strategies, recycling initiatives, waste evaluation, and charitable contributions.
