• WHAT will be done
Description:
Since waste management requires a holistic perspective involving all actors, within the scope of the 2024 theme “Food Waste”, in order to contribute to İSTAÇ’s efforts to evaluate food waste and to contribute to the efficiency of the system by supporting the separate collection efforts of district municipalities for food waste, a field visit will be made to İSTAÇ’s Biomethanization Facility in Kemerburgaz on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at 14:00. The visit, planned for the managers of the environmental units of district municipalities in İstanbul, will be held as a joint event of İSTAÇ and MMU within the scope of EWWR.
MMU will announce on one hand the event to district municipalities in İstanbul to form the delegation of environmental directors and on the other hand İSTAÇ will organize the content of visit program.
Finally İSTAÇ will carry out the action with the support of MMU.
Since the responsibility of waste collection belongs to the district municipalities while the treatment and disposal to the metropolitan municipality (finally metropolitan municipality’s subsidiary İSTAÇ as the only authority in this field), it is very important from this perspective to raise awareness of local authorities, namely those directors in the first hand in district municipalities, in their efforts in separate collection at the source. Then important step can be taken towards the efficiency of İSTAÇ’s Biomethanization Facility which processes organic waste and converts it into electrical energy. As a result, this site visit action may contribute to the efforts of all responsible actors related to waste management in the city and efficiency of the system in overall.
As a subsidiary company of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, ISTAÇ, which started to operate Turkey’s first sanitary landfill in 1994, provides services in the field of waste and environmental management in order to bequeath livable cities to future generations.
ISTAÇ aims to prevent the environmental damage caused by waste production, which has accelerated with the increase in population and the amount of individual waste, as much as possible, to protect nature by reducing the use of limited natural resources and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from waste.

Environmental Laboratory Analyses
About İSTAÇ Biomethanization Facility: Biomethanization Facility, which processes organic waste and converts it into electrical energy, produce biogas from organic waste in an oxygen-free environment, and produces 1.4 MW of electrical energy from the obtained biogas.
In the Biomethanization Facility, which opened in 2021, organic waste collected separately at the source for the first time in Istanbul is processed and converted into compost and electrical energy.
Biogas obtained by separating organic waste in an oxygen-free environment in the facility is burned, producing 1.4 MW of electrical energy per hour, thus preventing 81,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. The high organic value compost produced is used in Istanbul’s parks and gardens.
