Collecting Capers
• WHAT will be done
Description:
During the European Week of Waste Reduction (EWWR) 2024, Sacred Heart College is promoting an action focused on raising awareness of locally available, sustainable resources. In preparation for EWWR, Ekoskola students undertook a caper collection initiative, gathering capers from shrubs growing on the school grounds. The students then washed, preserved them in brine, and sold jars to the school community. This effort was communicated to parents and staff, highlighting the abundance of local capers and encouraging families to look for similar shrubs during outings.
Families were provided with instructions on how to harvest and preserve these capers, underscoring the importance of utilizing native plants that grow naturally in the environment. This action not only champions food waste reduction by harvesting locally available, often overlooked produce but also supports sustainable choices by reducing reliance on imported goods, thereby lowering carbon emissions.
