Creative Leftovers Recipe Book
• WHAT will be done
Description:
In alignment with the 2024 European Week of Waste Reduction (EWWR) theme of Reducing Food Waste, Sacred Heart Junior School students carried out an action that fostered both literacy and sustainability skills. In June 2024, as the summer holidays approached, students and their parents were invited to create unique recipes using leftover food items from home. Each student was encouraged to document their culinary process by sending photos of both the cooking steps and final results. They also wrote detailed recipes with instructions, focusing on creative ways to re-purpose food that might otherwise go to waste. This initiative was extended to all members of staff (teaching and non-teaching).
These recipes were later compiled into a booklet, representing the collective effort and creativity of the school community toward reducing food waste. Scheduled for release in November, the booklet will be sold within the school, with proceeds going to support Hospice Organisation. This initiative not only promotes sustainability and awareness about food waste but also enhances students’ literacy and creativity through practical application and community involvement.
