From waste to food: helping the planet one bite at a time
• WHAT will be done
Description:
School outings held during the EWWR week will have, instead of the normal activity linked to their age and curriculum, a special workshop about this year’s theme in which the children will have an activity that highlights the importance of reducing food waste through composting. During their outing, school children have a break time for eating and they will be instructed to place their food scraps into a compost bin, or “wormery,” where worms will break down the waste into valuable compost. They’ll also learn that food scraps aren’t the only compostable items—we’ll be collecting coffee waste from our on-site restaurant, La Nave Bistro, and using it as compost for our plants throughout the week. In a hands-on workshop, children will discover how composting helps the environment by reducing waste and how they can start a compost bin at home, or at least start separating organic waste from discard and recycling waste locally too. Additionally, they’ll see the full cycle in action, as the compost worms will eventually become food for our reptiles, showing how every part of Nature can support another for a sustainable, zero-waste ecosystem, and how it is our responsibility to do the same in order to help the ocean and other ecosystems we coexist with.
As usual, we will promote educational content about this topic on our social media too – including quizzes, reels and posts.
