WHAT will be done

Description:

In order to create a sustainable and environmentally-conscious school community and promote awareness about food waste and sustainability with all the school stakeholders (students, educators, parents/guardians & their families) and the community in general, the following actions will be carried out:-

  • through a Kahoot quiz (ICT lesson) on the students’ school tablet,  students’ knowledge will be gauged;
  • integrating food waste topics across the curriculum –  specific lessons during Wellness sessions, Science lessons, Expressive Arts (Emotions in Motions sessions) and class teachers’ lessons/sessions;
  • educational talk to students at school regards ‘Food Waste’ – ways to prevent, eliminate and reduce it;
  • implement a ‘NO FOOD WASTE’ policy during lunch breaks;
  • through a Google Form parents and educators will input their knowledge or lack of it regards ‘Food Waste’;
  • parental talk regards ‘Food Waste’ – ways to prevent, eliminate and reduce it. The promotion of Meal Prep is highlighted and emphasized and a re usable (one word?) Meal Prep template will be given to each family;
  • parents/grandparents involvement in class to either:
    • Share a recipe that reduces food waste by giving examples which/of how leftovers or less-than-perfect ingredients, can be used
    • Offer tips and tricks for preventing food waste at home, like smart storage ideas or meal planning tricks.
    • Join in hands-on with our students and demonstrate how to make the most out of every meal!
    • Discuss the Impact: Help students understand how food waste harms the environment and what we can do to make a change.
  • in order to minimise the Maltese culture/mentality of over eating, suggestions regarding portion control and smaller servings, will be presented;
  • educate that ‘Food Waste’ has a severe environmental impact;
  • to promote that ‘Food Waste’ is ultimately ‘Money Waste’;
  • students will learn and investigate what is the feel and knowledge of the general public, by conducting live Vox pops in various popular localities, supermarkets, open markets, fruit and vegetable vendors, amongst others, and obviously outside school premises;
  • students will distribute posters on ways to reduce ‘Food Waste’ as well as Meal prep templates to the general public after Vox Pop is conducted;
  • A Lidl representative will be delivering an informative talk at the school hall to the Junior years, about their store’s adopted policy/ies to minimise food waste;
  • On behalf of Earthly Food’s Talk as part of the Let’s Talk Farming (LTF) Programme, two separate sessions will be held at school and delivered by Chef Alan Warren, one for the students and another one for all the staff. The chef will deliver, a hands-on food preparation sessions and will be creating further awareness on reducing food waste;
  • through a Google Form distributed to the main 4 or 5-star hotels in Gozo, students investigate what happens to the surplus food in these establishments. Depending on the findings, the EkoSkola committee will provide concrete suggestions to address this matter;
  • by means of posts on the school’s Facebook page, information about food waste in general as well as the different initiatives taken and suggestions on addressing the issue will be shared with the general public thus promoting further this awareness;
  • the Kerċem Local Council will be requested to share such posts on its page so that the residents of this village will become more aware of the problem and how it can be tackled.
