The activity will be carried out by 7/8 year old students in a Year 4 class. The project will be scaffolded so that students gain maximum knowledge and assimilate key facts on food waste and how this can be reduced. These are the basic steps will intend to follow:
- learn about how food is produced (carry out research and share their findings via a Show and Tell exercise).
- Learning about food waste – using the information on the EWWR website the teacher will create a reading comprehension to help students learn more about how food is wasted and what impact it is leaving on the economy and our environment.
- Learning about the 3 R’s and how these can be applied to food waste – we will brainstorms solutions. The main focus will be on Reducing (planning meals ahead so as to buy as much food as we need and not more), Reusing ( Cooking with leftovers) and Recycling (Composting).
- Taking action by creating posters, information leaflets and videos using AI so as to raise awareness in our community. These videos will then be shared on the school FB page and with the wider community through a QR code that leads you to them.
- Going around in the community distributing the posters and leaflets to all grocers, green grocers and butchers found in the school area and to passers by. Students will get the chance to share what they learned with people and encourage them to reduce food waster by providing practical tips.
- Holding a whole school assembly so as to share our good practice with the whole school and teach other students about food waste and how the 3R’s can be used vis a vis food waste.
- Placing a compost bin in the school garden where all classes will be asked to throw their organic waste. Once the organic waste decomposes, we will use it as soil to fertilise out orange and lemon trees at school.
