Reducing Food Waste in the Office

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

Lidl in Estonia has partnered with a local organization specializing in food redistribution lockers. This newly established partnership has been set up to help reduce any food waste (mainly fruit, vegetables, open milk cartons that might not survive the weekend and any other perishable items) at the Lidl Eesti office that may be left over after the working week.

How it works:
1. On Friday’s, Lidl’s CSR consultant (the project manager) receives info from other project team members in the office whether there are any fruit and other perishable foods left in the kitchens
2. If there are significant food leftovers that cannot be consumed by office employees before the end of the day then the project lead will call the outside organization (Fudloop) and order a pick up for that same afternoon (usually a friday)
3. Team members will bring all perishable items to the office main kitchen
4. A Fudloop volunteer will come to pick up any leftover food and take it directly to one of Fudloop’s food redistribution lockers where the food will be redistributed that same night
6. Project team will reevaluate the portions of food to reduce the chance of leftovers in the next weeks

Our main goal is to offer our employees healthy snacks and order them as precisely as possible to AVOID any waste in the first place. However, it can be very complicated to predict the number of employees coming into the office each given week or take into account any vacations/work trips etc which means that it will not be possible to avoid leftovers every week. To combat this, we have established this partnership which works especially great thanks to the flexibility of our partner Fudloop who is always just a phone call away to help us save food!
