Where: Monemvasia Cinema Club, Nomia Village, Laconia
On the sidelines of its regular film screenings at the Monemvasia Cinema Club, the association “Politistikes Diadromes (Cultural Routes)” will screen the documentary “Remains” on 22 November 2024, as an awareness-raising action on waste reduction, reuse and recycling under the umbrella of the European Week of Waste Reduction 2024.
About the documentary
“Remains” is a mid-length documentary produced by Re-Direct, a team that wishes to point out the food waste issue in Athens, and directed by Irene Chatzi and Emmanuela Kyriakopoulou. Through the narratives of seven distinct individuals (an activist, a social kitchen founder, a chef, a supermarket chain and three representatives of organizations), we understand the concept of food waste. Every year, millions of tons of food end up in landfills when it could be given to our fellow human beings. A typical example is that if a producer produces 100 kilos of tomatoes, 33 kilos are unfortunately thrown away.
The film ‘touches’ on sensitive issues such as overconsumption, the economic crisis and the illusion of abundance, i.e. that food is inexhaustible. What can we do to reduce food waste? In the documentary, solutions are proposed, such as raising public awareness, using food properly and creating organised action.
About the Monemvasia Cinema Club and the association “Politistikes Diadromes (Cultural Routes)”
The Cinema Club of Monemvasia was created by the association “Politistikes Diadromes (Cultural Routes)” in 2008. It is a non-profit effort and is based on the voluntary work of its members.
The self-made Monemvasia Cinema is hosted in the beautiful, stone building of the old elementary school of Nomia, a village near Monemvasia and it is screening films for kids and adults, proving the fact that the seventh art has the power to transport us and educate us at the same time.
It was initiated by a group of people who brought back life to a building that used to be the elementary school for the kids of the village but was deserted many years ago, when there was no youth left in the village of Nomia. The aim was to bring back the cinematic experience to their rural area, where the closest cinema was a two hour drive away, in Sparta, and it is mainly screening blockbuster type of movies.
The movies shown in Monemvasia Cinema are usually European independent movies, selected collectively by the team that voluntarily runs the cinema, with the aim to make them accessible to the locals and thus supporting local transitions with the medium of arts, while bringing back a crucial element to the community.
