Seasonal Fruit Picking

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

In November 2024, as part of the European Week of Waste Reduction (EWWR) initiatives, Sacred Heart College will launch a fruit-picking project aimed at reducing food waste and promoting healthy habits. Led by the Eko-Skola and Gardening Club, students will gather ripe oranges from trees within the school garden. In preparation for this initiative, younger students who play under the shade of these trees have been taught to wait until the fruit is fully ripened before picking, ensuring no unripe oranges go to waste.

This initiative highlights the importance of making the most of locally grown fruit that often falls and goes unused. The collected oranges will be shared within the school, emphasizing their health benefits, particularly during flu season. To extend this action beyond school grounds, students will be encouraged to pick any oranges or pomegranates from trees at home. They’ll be invited to send in photos of their fruit-picking efforts and share any products they create, such as fresh juices or homemade jams. This initiative not only reinforces waste reduction but also promotes sustainable, healthy living practices both at school and at home.
