Too Good to Waste!

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

Firstly, we are going to involve the school population in an awareness-raising activity where students and parents will increase their knowledge about food waste in households.  Members of staff from the Home Economics Seminar Centre will visit the classes and hold a 45-minute session about Food Waste.  Through these sessions, students will understand about the impact of food waste on the environment, learn how to avoid waste through good planning and through other savvy consumer practices, learn about sustainable cooking and also find out ways how to be more creative in their cooking by using ingredients fully and using leftovers.  A workshop for parents is also going to be organised.

Following the awareness raising activities, the older students will be invited to participate in a school competition where together with their parents they will prepare and serve a sustainable dish that creates the least food waste possible. Students need to show creativity in using the ingredients as fully as possible.  They can also produce a dish using leftovers. They will take photos of these dishes and send the recipes together with photos to school. A team of judges will choose the best recipes in each year group.

The recipes will be used to produce a digital recipe book using the Book Creator.  This will be disseminated to all families in the school and will also be shared with all the schools in St. Nicholas College.

A concurrent project will be held with one Year 2 class where the teacher will integrate Maths with the topic of Food Waste.  The students will solve problems related to leftover food.  Each Mathematical problem will lead to a recipe which the students will prepare together with their teacher.
