Description:

The initiative Upcycle Veste o Futuro is a partnership between the Environment Department of the Matosinhos City Council, the Environmental Monitoring Division, and the “Peças que Contam” project.

The purpose of this action is to raise awareness within the community about textile waste and to promote the creative reuse of clothing, providing practical tools and knowledge to extend the life of garments. Through workshops and inspiring activities, participants will be encouraged to adopt a more conscious and sustainable approach to fashion, contributing to the circular economy and a more responsible future.

The Lionesa Business Hub is invited to collaborate in this project, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and innovation. The proposal includes engaging businesses and employees of Lionesa, promoting a culture of environmental responsibility and interaction with the community.

General Objective:

 

Raise awareness about textile waste and promote the creative reuse of clothing through practical activities. The initiative aims to empower participants to give new life to unused garments, encouraging conscious and sustainable consumption practices.

Proposed Activities:

  • Botanical Printing on Fabric Workshop
    Instructor: Expert in botanical printing
    Description: Natural printing techniques using leaves and flowers on fabrics, transforming basic pieces into true works of art. Participants can bring their own t-shirts, towels, or fabrics to customize.
    Objective: Show how natural materials can be used to decorate fabrics sustainably, highlighting the connection between fashion and nature.
  • Fabric Painting Workshop
    Instructor: Artist specialized in fabric painting
    Description: Personalization of clothing and accessories using manual painting techniques, creating exclusive and artistic pieces. The use of eco-friendly paints reinforces the sustainability message.
    Objective: Encourage customization as a way to extend the life of garments, giving them unique and emotional value.
  • Clothing Swap Area – “Circular Closet”
    Description: A space where participants can exchange gently used clothing, with special contributions from Lionesa employees. This encourages social interaction, environmental education, and wardrobe renewal in a fun and sustainable way.
    Objective: Raise awareness about conscious consumption, promoting reuse and community spirit.
  • Exhibition: The Impact of Textile Waste
    Description: An interactive exhibition showcasing the environmental impact of textile waste, with data on the effects of fast fashion on the planet.
    Objective: Raise awareness about the lifecycle of clothing items and promote responsible fashion practices.
  • Reflection and Creativity Space – “Sustainable Ideas Hub”
    Description: A creative meeting space where participants can exchange ideas, explore books on sustainable fashion and the circular economy, and see examples of transformed clothing pieces.
    Objective: Inspire participants with ideas and trends related to conscious fashion

    Communication and Promotion:
  • Social Media Campaign: Promote the event on social media with a campaign focused on sustainability and creativity. Encourage participants to share their creations using an exclusive hashtag.
  • Local Partnerships: Collaborate with local brands, artists, and influencers to promote the event and attract a diverse audience.

  • November 19 (Tuesday):
    • 11:30 AM – Event opening and start of “Circular Closet”
    • 12:00 PM – Botanical Printing and Fabric Painting Workshops
    • 11:30 AM – 3:00 PM – Reflection on the impact of textile waste and “Sustainable Ideas Hub”
    • 3:00 PM – Event closes
  • November 20 (Wednesday):
    • 11:30 AM – Opening and continuation of “Circular Closet”
    • 12:00 PM – Botanical Printing and Fabric Painting Workshops
    • 11:30 AM – 3:00 PM – Reflection on the impact of textile waste and “Sustainable Ideas Hub”
    • 3:00 PM – Event closes

Sustainability and Zero Waste Approach:

  • Materials: Recycled and eco-friendly materials will be used in the activities, including eco-friendly paints and organic fabrics.
  • Zero Waste: Practices to reduce waste, such as eliminating disposable plastics and promoting recycling, will be implemented throughout the event.

This initiative offers a unique opportunity to inspire positive change, raise awareness about textile waste, and provide practical tools for a more sustainable and creative approach to fashion. By engaging the community in these hands-on activities,  Upcycle Veste o Futuro aims to foster a culture of responsibility, creativity, and environmental consciousness.
