Waste less, save more
• WHAT will be done
Description:
Food waste is not only a humanitarian concern but also an environmental one, since water and energy are needed to grow, transport and package food. In an article that was published in 2023 on Food Waste, it was stated that each Maltese individual generates approximately 62kg of food waste each year. This not only is a burden on our landfills but also increases greenhouse emissions.
After numerous discussions, the EkoSkola committee decided to raise awareness on this issue through talks by an advocate on reducing food waste and discussions during form time and morning assembly about this issue and how to best combat it. In order to further involve the students, we will be creating a frame whereby students will be able to take pictures and write down how they are contributing to reducing food waste.
Moreover, the students will also be creating various posters on wise shopping practices, meal planning as well as portion control to reduce leftovers. Furthermore, to raise awareness on the importance of using leftover foods, we will be inviting a chef from MasterChef Malta, whereby, he will be organising a workshop with students on how to make the best use of leftover foods. The EkoSkola committee will also be creating a leaflet which we aim to share and distribute to the school staff and parents.
In order to make sure that everyone can contribute to this campaign a competition will be organised for students, whereby they will be encouraged to create a poster with a message on reducing food waste. The best three posters will be given a prize.
Our school will also be collaborating with Foodbank Malta in order to help children and adults who are experiencing hunger in Malta.
