With the beginning of the new school year, in the 4th High School of Lamia, an action was designed and started to be implemented dynamically, which aims at the reduction and recycling of the waste that is produced mainly during the operation of the school.

As part of this action, the following actions were taken:

• Bins and special constructions were placed in the courtyard for separate placement per type of waste. Buckets and papers, for plastics, for frying oils, batteries, but also special constructions for plastic bottles, aluminum cans plastic lids and electronic devices. In the school garden there has been a special wooden construction for years where plant residues from pruning are placed in order to compost them.

• The small bins were removed from the halls and placed only in certain places in the corridors, with the prospect that only non-recyclable waste such as tissues, food scraps and general materials that are “dirty” and should not end up in the recycling bins will end up in them. Recyclable should be disposed of in the backyard.

• The school management has reached an agreement with companies that are active in the field of recycling and can receive the materials collected. In return they will offer photocopy paper and various gifts (e.g. bicycles) which will be drawn to the students of the school.

• At the end of each day, the waste that is not recycled and will inevitably end up in the green bins of the Municipality is weighed by the school cleaning staff and recorded.

The whole action is also an experiment through which it will be seen if a small community like the school can reduce its waste and at the same time adopt the practice of source sorting, to implement a waste management model which should be applied years ago at the level of the Municipality.
