The Pre-Loved Initiative – Second-hand cloth nappy scheme in Malta

WHAT will be done

The Cloth Nappy Company in Malta will be launching The Pre-Loved Initiative which is a scheme that will allow people to buy & sell second-hand cloth nappies in Malta! The Cloth Nappy Company has been in operation since July 2019 and since we have seen a lot of people opt for reusable cloth nappies instead of disposables. This has been helping to increase our household waste massively which will not only save money that would normally be used to collect this waste but more importantly a lot less waste has been reaching our landfill.

One of the main challenges our families have been facing is the upfront cost of purchasing cloth nappies. Although in the long run, cloth nappies are by far cheaper than disposables, saving families a minimum of €470 until their baby is potty trained, the initial outlay to buy reusables is significant and some families struggle with this. It is also sometimes a deterrent and comes in between families making this switch to reusables.

At The Cloth Nappy Company, we have thought about this and have seen the huge second-hand market in other countries such as the UK, Canada and Australia and are finally in a position to launch The Pre-Loved Initiative which will allow families to purchase these reusable cloth nappies at a fraction of the original price. This will not only make cloth nappies more economically viable but also much more environmentally viable as the products will be reused by more than one baby!

The Cloth Nappy Company will be purchasing second-hand nappies from families whose babies are now potty trained. We will be washing and cleaning the products and certifying them fit for use again and re-selling at a fraction of the original RRP.
