ATHOS: Avanzando Todos Hacia Objetivos Sostenibles

WHAT will be done

Description:

The Environment division of the FCC Group (FCC Medio Ambiente) has become a reference point in the provision of urban services, which include municipal urban waste collecting and processing, park and garden conservation, and road, street, beach and coastal cleaning. Its 29,635 collaborators contribute to maintaining and improving the quality of life of 28 million inhabitants in 3,583 Spanish municipalities every single day.

To actively participate in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals SDGs of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the commitments reached at the COP21 in Paris, the company, FCCMA, has in recent years been developing a system, based on internationally recognised methods, protocols and standards, which assesses and improves the sustainable environmental management of its activities and services. The company also fosters the implementation of good practices, such as recording its carbon footprint for the third consecutive year (2011/2015) with the Oficina de Cambio Climático (Spanish Climate Change Office).

The EU’s new “circular economy” package constitutes a big challenge for companies like FCC. This is because, in addition to managing waste, they will now have to “close the circle” of product life cycles through greater reuse, recycling and participation of all those involved, which will provide environmental and social benefits (green employment, and a social and solidarity-based economy) that will be seen in our society.

The social and environmental challenges faced by companies involved in managing public services, as is the case of FCC Medio Ambiente, requires the participation of the whole company, from the directors to the operators on the ground. We are implementing and promoting different awareness, collaboration and training initiatives to progress in improving the environmental performance of our collaborators in their daily work.

At the end of 2015, we participated in the “Un millón de compromisos por el Clima ”. This saw FCC encouraging all of its employees to commit to and accept the invitation of the MAGRAMA to form part of a community committed to the climate. Furthermore, we are also collaborating with different local and national associations, on recovering and assessing materials obtained from the collection points that we manage, which led to the recycling of a total of 304 tonnes of textiles and 2,644 tonnes of WEEE in 2015 .

At the end of 2015, we implemented a specific environmental training plan that aims to get our employees to work in such a way that it helps us to achieve responsible and sustainable environmental management (efficient use of water and energy resources, mitigation of GHG emissions, fostering of the 3Rs: Reduction, preparation for Reuse and waste Recycling to protect Biodiversity).

Our business aim is encourage our employees to be ambassadors of good practices and to set a good example for citizens, whose environmental conduct is essential for the good sustainable development of our services.

Action proposed for the Week of the 19th -27th November:
To implement and foster, both inside and outside the company, the voluntary and united participation of our employees in an initiative that proposes collecting textiles and WEEE, prioritising its reuse through a collaboration with social and solidarity-based economy recuperators.

Place:
We will place textile and WEEE containers in a visible and accessible area inside our work centres, where our employees can voluntarily donate their WEEE and waste textiles.

Number of FCCMA employees invited to participate: a group of around 4,266 employees in 18 centres in 16 cities in which FCC serves (193 employees in San Sebastián that represent 4,5 % of the employees invited to participate in this nationwide initiative).

Social and Solidarity-based Economy organisations associated with the project:
We will collaborate with Caritas and Ecolec that will prepare the textiles and WEEE collected through their local establishments for their subsequent reuse. Furthermore, a representative of the association will organise an awareness talk during the week for employees.

Internal and external dissemination and communication of the initiative:
An internal communication plan will accompany the dissemination of the initiative (launch/monitoring/results) through traditional means (posters, articles, press releases, corporate website) and social networks. The launch of said initiative will be publicised fifteen days before it takes place.

Monitoring and traceability of the initiative:
During the EWWR initiative, we will record data regarding the number of participants, daily contributions and kgs collected per material. This will be done so we can keep employees up to date and so we can release the results obtained and the degree of success of the initiative at the end of the week. Furthermore, interviews will be conducted in situ to gather the opinions of employees and social organisation representatives. The interviews will be disseminated through the corporate website.

Acknowledgement and good practices award:
In the course of the EWWR, we will organize a “most efficient” and “replicable” 3Rs initiative competition, under the circular economy framework, in which FCC employees will be able to participate by reporting a good replicable practice that an individual has successfully undertaken to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

End of the initiative:
Once the initiative has come to an end, we will assess the results achieved and disseminate them through the FCC-EWWR website and the internal Communication Network magazine, etc. The containers installed in some centres will remain in place for a while longer so that FCC employees can continue to voluntarily donate their textiles and WEEE, which will continue to be collected by the local associations to be reused.
