Christmas Green Fair

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

The Christmas Green Fair is a 2-day event being organised with the goal of inspiring conscious consumerism through more mindful shopping choices. The event consists of several market stalls and activities being organised for adults and children alike, all aimed to helping people learn about transitioning to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Here is a list of the waste-reduction themed activities we are preparing at the Christmas Green Fair on 19 and 20 November:

1. Kids 4 Kids Market – this is a chance for kids to be a stall-holder for the day and sell their 2nd hand items, such as school uniforms, clothes, shoes, books, board games, toys, and a variety of other things. Purchasing a pre-owned item keeps it out of landfill and extend its lifetime. Studies show that the most sustainable form of consumption is the direct re-use of products. Plus, kids love the idea of being entrepreneurs for the day, haggling, swapping and giving change money.

2. Various Kids Workshops including:
– Make your own Advent Calendar – a crafty kids workshop which involves different fun skills for the kids. The advent calendars are created from 100% upcycled material – mainly toilet paper rolls.
– Make your own Santa Stocking – a workshop for kids to sew their own stocking, and personalise it the way they want, using exclusively re-purposed curtains and old clothes.

3. Sustainable Gift Wrapping Station
To further assist our visitors, we will be offering a Sustainable Gift Wrapping Station, for customers who want to wrap up the gifts they purchase from the market in an attractive yet sustainable way. We will provide furoshiki (fabric wrapping), use plain recyclable kraft brown paper and a myriad of dried leaves, flowers, pinecones and other organic material to decorate the gifts. Instead of tape we will use biodegradable jute string. We will re-purpose a number of magazines, boxes, and glass jars, etc.

4. Thrifting Corner
There will also be a thrifting corner where visitors can find pre-loved and vintage clothing for men, women, children and various accessories including shoes, bags, ties, jewellery, and books – all at excellent affordable prices.

5. Market Stalls
Over 40 market stalls selling products that have been pre-approved as eco-friendly. We examine each product and evaluate data such as raw material, production, energy and packaging. The products are from many different categories, such as, beauty products, toiletries and house cleaning detergents, wine, beer & chocolate, home decor, pottery, blankets, carpets & candles, various jewellery and accessories, plants and saplings, many items for children and several zero-waste stuff. There are several stalls promoting sustainable fashion showcasing innovative garments such as econyl, or trendy fashion made out of upcycled or re-purposed fabric.

6. Food area
The food truck and the food stalls at the Green Fair serve food in sustainable, plastic-free packaging, cutlery and napkins. The food is entirely vegan and vegetarian. At the event, many food stall holders provide the BYOC concept, where customers are encouraged to bring their own container and benefit from a discount.
