The EWWR action of the municipality of Platanias will culminate on Tuesday 21st with clean-up events and distribution of special cloth bags with environmental messages and the logo of the organization. The participants for the clean-up event are volunteers from local villages of the area as well as young pupils from primary schools in the area.
The municipality of Platanias has launched a call for clean-up volunteers for the EWWR initiative from 18 to 26 of November and similar Debris Tracker Projects during the whole month of November. Simple citizens, pupils and members of non-profit organizations have responded positively so clean-up events took place on November 1st, 16th, and 21th in the areas or Platanias small harbour, Gerani beach, Kolymvari beach, Nochia square, Kathiana village, and Kalydonia streets. The municipality of Platanias distributes reusable cloth bags to all participants and provides gloves, plastic dustbin bags and picking sticks during the day of the events. A total of 3000 cloth bags has been prepared by the municipality for distribution throughout the year. Some t-shirts with environmental messages are also given to some participants (the leadership members) as reward and means of ecological ethical awareness.
The municipality promoted and used the free Debris Tracker app, available for both Android and iPhone to record the collected wastes during the events. This application is didactic and fun to use. It lets anyone record data for a variety of litter items and upload it to an open database. The data can then be viewed by researchers and other citizen scientists from around the world by getting them to
look at the wastes in their area.

The clean-up events could be repeated on weekly basis depending on the volunteers’ availability and self-planning. The municipality of Platanais is always ready for support and sensitization of citizens to keep the island of Crete clean and enjoyable.
