WHAT will be done

Description:

For World Cleanup Campaign 2022 the Ministry for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government created a scheme where all 68 Local Council in the Maltese Islands were eligible to apply for a maximum fund of €5000 to conduct a Clean-Up in their locality between Tuesday 13th September 2022 – Wednesday 21st September 2022. The Eastern Regional Council (ERC) took responsibility and successfully applied for 3 respective Local Councils; Il-Gżira, Ħal-Għargħur and Is-Swieqi. On the other hand the; Birkirkara, L-Iklin, L-Imsida, Tal-Pieta’ and Ta’ Xbiex Local Councils applied themselves following help from the Eastern Regional Council. While the remaining four localities that make up the ERC either did everything themselves or did not apply at all. All Local Councils that applied received the amount of funding they requested in the application form, thus the amount of funds they deemed necessary to conduct a professional Clean-Up. Ħal-Għargħur and Is-Swieqi Local Councils joined forces and conducted a joint clean up on Tuesday 13th September 2022. The area cleaned up stretched from Top of the World in Ħal-Għargħur to Triq il-Madliena in Swieqi, and during this clean-up a total of 31 garbage bags of waste was collected, with the glass being separated from the mixed waste. The Eastern Regional Council contacted NGO ”QLZH” to help with this clean-up where they provided a number of volunteers and the equipment needed. Despite the help the NGO offered the NGO was contacted so that they provide all the equipment and thus, no new equipment had to be bought by the Region or Local Councils thus there was less waste. Following the clean-up, the Swieqi Local Council waste collector came and picked up the bags separating the mixed from the glass waste and was disposed of accordingly. For the Gżira clean-up, the ERC together with the Gżira Local Council contacted NGO ‘’Zibel’’ to conduct an underwater clean-up at Gżira creek. The Clean-Up was held on Friday 16th September 2022 and the total amount of waste collected stood at 1327.82 kg’s, the waste collected was disposed of accordingly by the NGO. For the Ta’ Xbiex clean-up, the ERC together with the Ta’ Xbiex Local Council contacted NGO ‘’Zibel’’ to conduct an underwater clean-up along the Ta’ Xbies coastline. The clean-up was held on Sunday 18th September 2022 and a total of 651.96 kg’s of waste was collected, the waste collected was then disposed of accordingly by the NGO as they did for the Gżira clean-up. The remaining localities all conducted land clean-ups, Birkirkara collected 10 garbage bags of waste in a clean-up conducted at Mannarino Road (valley), L-Imsida collected a total of 70 garbage bags of waste from Triq il-Wied tal-Imsida (around the Gibjun). Tal-Pieta’ Local Council conducted two separate clean-ups, one during the morning which was attended by children attending Pieta Hotspurs F.C. and other organisations while the second clean-up was targeted for adults and was conducted during the evening. A total of 70 full garbage bags of waste were collected from the following areas: Pjazza San Luqa, Housing Area, Pieta Hotspurs, Patri Isidor Formosa Garden, Marina garden (in front of the bocci club) and the playing field located in Triq Patri Vincenz Portelli. Overall, the clean-ups conducted were a success and a decent amount of waste was collected. Despite the main aim of cleaning the respective areas, these events also served as a social activity were various people of all ages and from all walks of life got together and socialized for a good cause. These clean-ups were also a reality check on the actual amount of waste that is discarded irresponsibly, even in areas where one would not accept to find as much. Various social media posts were posted on the Kunsill Regjonali Lvant Facebook and Instagram pages highlighting the amount of waste collected, these posts were shared by the respective Local Councils, Mayors, councillors and the NGO themselves to reach out more people.
