ClothesSmart
• WHAT will be done
Description:
The Environmental Resource Officer team will be launching ClothesSmart, a campaign to encourage people of all ages to consider their attitudes to fast fashion and make simple changes which reduces their fashion footprint. This includes attitudes to purchasing, maintaining and ultimately responsibly disposing of clothing. As part of this one officer is launching a year of not buying any new clothes where practical and shopping in local charity shops. This experiment is mindful of the fact that for many charity shops are the shops of necessity and not choice. It is encouraging people to reflect on their wardrobes, purchasing habits and how to better maintain clothing to increase lifespan. Ethical disposal or re-purposing is the final link in this chain and obviously we will be encouraging people to consider charity shops if thinking of discarding unwanted or unneeded items of clothing.
During the week, information will be widely circulated using a variety of media on the Clothing Challenge as well as how to better care for clothing and some of the facts around fast fashion and its impacts on people and planet. People will be encouraged to join in and share ‘fashion pledges’.
We will also highlight the connections between fast fashion and climate crisis, empowering people to do something locally which has global benefits. We want people to become fashion activists.
