Cooking Oil – New Waste Stream at Campsite

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

We were noticing that users of the Bahar ic-Caghaq Campsite were throwing away used cooking oil in the soil. This was unacceptable. Other users were placing it in empty water bottles and left next to the other waste streams that we already had in place since EWWR 2017 (Wood, metal, paper/cardboard, plastic, glass, ashes and compost (organic).

An empty jerrycan was re-used and painted ‘Cooking Oil’ with old blue paint which found in the campsite store. This action was done in April 2019.

Campsite rules were updated with the inclusion of the new waste stream. The opening times of the Maghtab Civic Amenity Site are now provided, as when this jerrycan is full, this is taken to the nearest place for correct disposal.

The iBiNs were introduced in the area so we included their new location within the campsite guidelines for the correct disposal of glass, metal, paper/cardboard and plastic.

The campsite is mainly used by our members and other Scout Groups. These set of guidelines are sent beforehand by e-mail to the scout group visiting the campsite and as well attached at the entrance of the campsite room.

During EWWR, photos of this action will be shared within our facebook page and with all 8000 scout members through Scoutkeeper to create further awareness and the importance of not littering outside.
