Creating a Sensory Garden

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

The creation of a sensory school garden using recycled materials was an inspiring and environmentally conscious project that engaged students in a hands-on, sustainable learning experience. Students actively participated in collecting recycled materials, such as old tires, pallets, containers, and discarded items, which were then repurposed into various components of the garden.

The garden was thoughtfully designed to stimulate the senses, featuring aromatic herbs, textured plants, wind chimes made from recycled objects, and a palette of vibrant colors. Recycled containers were ingeniously used for planting, transforming discarded items into unique and functional pots. Old cd disks were colourfully decorated and used as chimes to add colour and reflect the light.

Creativity was encouraged as students painted recycled items, turning them into vibrant decorations or artistic plant markers. A pathway was created using old gravel and broken stone slabs that were discorded. Students collected pebbles and stones and decorated them, even writing positive messages to add interest to the path way.

Educational signage made from recycled materials explained the purpose and benefits of the sensory garden, fostering environmental awareness among students and visitors alike.

This project is still ongoing and students have much more ideas to add to the garden including planning to plant more plants and discussing the possibility to establishing a composting system, using recycled bins, to promote sustainable waste management within the garden.

This sensory garden not only promoted sustainability but also provided a rich learning environment that enhanced sensory perception and connected students with nature in a meaningful way.
