Creating Maths Resources from Packaging Waste

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

Part 2 – Reaching out to Parents/Grandparents
5 workshops (3 workshops for Kinder 1 and 2 for Kinder 2 parents) will be delivered during the event of EWWR. During the first part of the workshop parents will be given information about the importance of introducing Maths concepts from an early age whilst helping the participants think of ways how one can make learning fun using non -expensive commercially bought resources which can be easily found at home. In the second part of the workshop parents will be working hands-on on creating various resources (eg. Dominoes, bingo with numbers, threading shapes) using packaging waste. These resources will not be used once and thrown away but will be used over and over again in the first years of the child’s schooling experience. Parents will also be invited to create a Maths bag (once again using recycled material like old curtain material/bedding material) to store resources in. This bag will be used throughout the early and primary years.

Proposed dates of workshops for parents:
Wednesday 23rd November
*Due to the nature of the hands-on workshop 5 sessions will be held. Participants will be asked to bring materials (scissors, permanent marker, ruler, cereal boxes, used shoe laces/string, plastic bottle tops) from home.
09:00 – 10:30 Kindergarten 1(Group 1) @ Annexe
10:45 – 12:15 Kindergarten 1(Group 2) @ Annexe
12:30 – 14:00 Kindergarten 1 (Group 3) @ Annexe
Friday 25th November
09:00 – 10:30 Kindergarten 2(Group 1) @ Main School
11:00 – 12:30 Kindergarten 2(Group 2) @ Main School

Methods of measurement:
1. Measure the amount of waste avoided by calculating the amount of reused packaging during the activities in classes and during parent’s workshops.
2. Measure parent participation by keeping an attendance sheet for each workshop.
3. Keep record of the amount of pupils who bring packaging materials for the activities in class.

Conclusion:
Through this project we intend to integrate education for sustainable development and Maths in the early years. We commit ourselves to provide more learning initiatives similar to what we intend to do during the EWWR event to increase more awareness on the importance of using what we already have to make learning fun and meaningful.
