Fishing for LitterFishing for Litter
• WHAT will be done
Description:
Fishing for Litter is an initiative that started out with one port in the Netherlands. Now it is active in over 74 ports around Europe, and it has also been implemented in Cyprus as part of the MarLitCy project. Fishing for Litter provides fishermen with special big bags, to collect any marine litter caught in their nets during their normal fishing operations. Once the bags are full, fishermen can dispose of the waste easily and free of charge in the dedicated bins, located at participating ports. On the 26/11/2021 we will provide a training session for local fishermen on the fishing for litter practices and how they can implement it themselves. There will be a specific focus on the issue of ghost nets (fishing gear that has been accidentally lost or deliberately discarded into the marine environment and continue to fish uncontrollably) and how fishermen can help reduce them. This will also provide the opportunity to generally raise awareness on the issue of marine litter and build capacity in local fishermen.
