In the municipality of Kavala, school students participate each year in a School Recycling Competition, focused on packaging waste and other similart waste (e.g. printed paper), in order to familiriaze themselves with the concepts of waste sorting and source separation. Unfortunately however, the nearest Material Recovery Facility (MRF) where source separated mixed packaging waste are being sorted and sent for recycling is about 45 km away, so students do not have the frequent opportunity to visit and experience the whole process. Based on that need, the schools that won last year’s School Recycling Competition will have the chance to visit the nearest MRF so as to experience the whole process of material sorting and to raise awareness about the importance of effective source separation at home or at school.
