During the year the Birgu Local Council gathers plastic bottles from all the residents in the locality of Birgu to be used during the Birgufest activity especially during the Birgu by Candlelight activity. These plastic bottles will be used to put small candles in them approximately around 20,000 candles.

The Council workers start by cleaning well the plastic bottles and cut them into half where the upper part of the bottle be recycled and the bottom part of the bottle will be used. Then they do a hole in the upper part of it and fill it with some sand and put the candle in. This process takes time. On the day of the activity, the Local Council together with the residents decorate all the streets with the candles in these bottles.

After the activity is over, the Council workers will gather and clean all these bottles so that they can be reused for the coming year.

During this week we are going to inform residents to start collecting plastik bottles and bring them to the Local Council. Council employees and volunteers will clean what bottles are still good to be used again next and prepare the new ones for this purpose. A number of pictures will eb upload on facebook during the week to show the whole process and make people realise how waste can bu a resource.
