Our Campsite..Let’s Recycle!!!

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

Re-use

The action was initiated by myself and the Caroline Borg (the Group Scout Leader) where on the 29th and 30th August 2017, we re-used three wooden pallets, two blue plastic drums, two metal drums and two metal containers to setup an area for waste sorting in our campsite found in Naxxar. Currently, no waste sorting was ever being done after a Scout group uses this campsite. Therefore a waste sorting and disposal system was created by including them in the campsite rules which are sent to every leader interested in using this campsite beforehand. As well all the Birkirkara scout group leaders were informed with this initiative.

This is the types of waste sorting that were created;

Waste Sorting

There are 8 waste types in the campsite;

1. Wood – Pallets or any type of wood can be brought with you to the campsite. Always ask if there is available on site before you bring more wood with you. This is used for cooking or campfire.

2. Metal – Any metal pieces are to be placed in the tank and then transfer to a cardboard box for disposal.

3. Paper/Cardboard – Place a Green bag in the container before use.

4. Plastic – Place a Green Bag in the container before use.

5. Glass – Place glass in the container and then transfer to a cardboard box for disposal.

6. Charcoal ashes – Used charcoal should be cooled before disposal and put in the bin provided.

7. Organic (Compost) – Place organic waste in compost bin found in campsite. The compost generated will be used to as fertiliser for crops grown here.

8. General – Place a Black bag in the container before use.

Waste Recycling

In these campsite rules, waste disposal was also included by including the waste collection calendar and located on google map, all the streets where the bring-in sites are located. Before this was not required since all the waste was not being separated and was going directly to general waste.

Our members will be reached face to face to do this action by organising a meeting at the campsite with the Troop and Venture sections. The new system will be explained to those sections on the 26th November (time: 13:00pm till 13:30pm) so that part of the scout group would be informed before starting our Christmas camp.

1st Birkirkara Scout Group will be holding the next Christmas Camp (8th till 10th December 2017) and we will put in action this system for all our members having an age from 7 to 18 years. We will find out how many black bags were reduced compared to amount of black bags disposed in previous campings.

Our action could be used by other campsites around Malta or even by the Scout Association of Malta. Any information could be provided to anyone.
