As a school we are promoting the REUSE of various objects. Many people throw away things in good condition which maybe useless for them but very useful to others. Our students are promoting the idea of collecting old books, used stationary, used clothes and various other small items like costume jewellery, frames, small decorations for homes etc… in good condition and then sell them with the help of parents for a few cents during a Bazaar held on Parents’ Day and Achievement day. The Bazaar is done with the help of parents and teachers. There is a strong link between the parents(community and the school).
The items sold are all used ITEMS which would have gone to WASTE if not collected by our students. The parents and the students and buying the items for few cents knowing that the money collecting would go for charity. It is a thrilling experience because the students are really becoming aware of the fact that everything around us is a resource and what is not good for me and may seem as waste it may be of good use for other people.
The books are one of the items mostly appreciated. With this initiative the students are collecting waste and the money collected is helping more people in need. Last year we help the MISSION in Guatemala. A total of 300euros were collected from old books, clothes and other items.
Another activity held is that the students are bringing the used and old clothes to school and they are sorting them out. Those clothes that are in good condition are sold for a few cents in the bazaar and the others are collected to be taken to REFAB: a non-profitable organisation which collects clothes to be sent to IRELAND for recycling. The depot is at Zebbug. This is done with the help of parents, teachers and other staff members.
Our wish is to expand and have a larger room where to store and sort more WASTE to be REUSED.
