“Organicopa” Championship … the recycling Olympiad, a living example of citizen involvement and circular economy

 

Organicopa is the initiative promoted by the Government of Navarra and the Waste Consortium, in 92 localities, to increase and improve bio-waste recycling.

Compared to the data from the previous year, the waste thrown into the rest container has decreased by 15%, thus reducing the volume that goes directly to the landfill and its consequent emission of CO2.

The prizes that have been given to the winning towns of this inter-municipal competition, which will receive urban furniture made with more than 300 tons of plastic and recycled capsules to complete the circular economy process.

This exemplary and unique initiative highlights the effort to raise awareness among citizens, the objective being that the collective effort allows for a more efficient and sustainable future to permeate more and more in society.

Recycled Material Awards

As a prize, the winning localities receive elements such as planters, benches, fences, bins, containers, etc., which must be used for a lasting project that provides a social benefit for the municipality and its population. This furniture has been generated with 300,000 kilos of plastic processed in the Culebrete treatment plant, in Tudela, and 260,000 coffee capsules collected in the Valdizarbe Community. These materials would end up in a landfill if not for this initiative.

It should be noted that this first edition of the Organicopa has also had a communication campaign through social networks to encourage citizens to separate organic matter. The initiative has achieved more than 57,000 impacts through Facebook and Instagram, networks in which it has added nearly 9,000 interactions.

Finally, it should be noted the results of this competition, which are that it has been an increase of 24% in the collection of organic matter.
