Reducing and reusing trash with SEEDS Iceland

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

During the EWWR week we are planning on carrying out two different events related to waste reduction in Iceland:

  • Coastal clean-up.  We have been carrying out coastal clean-ups for the past years, and this Autumn we have partnered up with the Blue Army (Blái herinn) in order to carry out weekly clean-ups with our volunteers and the public (Covid-19 guidelines permitting). Each time we have managed to collect between 700-1000 kg of trash, mostly plastic waste such as unused fishing nets and fishing buoys.
  • Creating Bokashi compost boxes from timber pallets. We are planning on reusing timber pallets to build small and medium-sized compost boxes that can be distributed through the houses where our volunteers are currently living in, but also to neighborhoods and individuals interested in diving in the science of composting. These boxes will be distributed for free, and our wish is to continue creating these throughout the year, according to demand (and success of the project).

Our main goals with these activities are to:

  • Reduce the waste in shorelines through picking trash with our volunteers;
  • Educate the general public regarding the dangers of plastic pollution, and learning simple ways to reduce and properly recycle waste;
  • Reuse leftover materials to create an easy-to-use compost box that can be used by everyone!
  • Inform the public on Bokashi composting through free virtual workshops (or in-person, if conditions permit) and explain how to use the box and.
  • Contribute to a reduction of the organic waste that ends up in the landfills and that instead can be used as a fertiliser in people’s gardens;
  • Mobilise young people to take action and feel empowered to make a change in their community through causes that are meaningful to them.
