Reducing single use plastic bags and food containers

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

Our school aims at reducing plastic in various ways. We started the campaign by installing a water fountain at school so as to reduce the number of 500ml single-use plastic bottles. It is estimated that we will be avoiding using around 4000 plastic bottles per scholastic year.

We also created a video to raise awareness and offer solutions on how to reduce single-use plastic bags and food containers when people are shopping at grocers or supermarkets. This is the youtube link to access the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqOq_vaP0IU

We carried out a clean up in collaboration with the Birzebbuga local council and a community outreach with the people in Birzebbuga and our school community.

We also linked with a local mesh bag supplier and we offer these bags for sale during various school events and whenever we have the opportunity to raise awareness on reducing plastic.

We bought reusable and foldable plastic cups for our school community to use during particular school events such as Christmas parties, Award giving ceremonies etc.

We bought reusable plastic cups for staff and visitors when we organise formal events and in-house training seminars and sessions.

We applied and were granted funds from the Life School projects to install a submersible water pump to bring up the water in our school for school cleaning purposes in this way avoiding water loss from rain and from the water fountain.

We will be organising an awareness week during the EWWR to continue educating our school community.
