Reducing Single Use Plastic Bottles – Healthy Snack Sale
• WHAT will be done
Description:
Through an environmental review carried out in the school by the Eko-Skola student committee, it resulted that the school was purchasing a substantial amount of single-use plastic bottles. Purchasing a drinking water fountain would help in reducing this waste. Students collected plastic bottles consumed at school both as a means to raise awareness amongst the school community to the amount of plastic waste being generated and to redeem the bottles into BCRS vouchers at a supermarket. With the vouchers they bought ingredients to create healthy snacks (banana muffins) which were then sold to students to raise money for the water fountain. Parent volunteers helped in the baking of these muffins. The muffins were brought to school in reusable boxes to reduce packaging which were then returned to the parents. Students who purchased the muffin were asked to bring their own re-usable container for storage.
