Replacing single use plastics
• WHAT will be done
Description:
Ormeau Park welcomes anything between 200 and 500 runners every Saturday morning, at least 100 of whom partake in a glass of water, or tea of coffee afterwards. Parkrun is about keeping fit but the primary aim is to encourage communities to socialise together, and so the coffee aspect is important. It perturbed some of us to see styrofoam cups being used each week and binned, so we bought over 200 reusable Ikea cups which volunteers wash each week after use. This idea has spread so other park runs in Belfast do the same. We have been doing this for over a year, so have now prevented 1000s of single-use plastics ending up in landfill. We also ensure we take away any milk cartons or cardboard boxes from cake and recycle them. It is such a simple idea but has minimised both cost and environmental damage.
