Seeds of Change: Cultivating Sustainability through Seed Paper Packaging

Info

WHAT will be done

Description:

The aim of the project is to educate students about sustainable packaging and promote environmental consciousness through the creation of seed paper packaging.

We will start by introducing the concept of sustainable packaging and the environmental benefits of such packaging as opposed to traditional packaging.  The importance of reducing waste and the impact of traditional packaging will also be discussed.  The idea of seed paper packaging will also be introduced.  This will be presented to the whole school during morning assembly.

The actual making of recycled seed paper packaging will be conducted with Year 4 classes.  Students will be encouraged to bring paper from packaging material such as cereal boxes and other paper.  This will be used to make recycled paper.  Flower or herb seeds will be infused in the pulp.  This seed infused pulp will be moulded into pouches.  The pouches will be dried.

Students will also prepare informational cards or pamphlets explaining the planting instructions and environmental benefits of seed paper packaging.

On the 24th of November, during Parents’ afternoon, these seed pouches will be distributed to the school community, staff and parents at a small cost. Students will have a stand to showcase their products and to explain how they were made.  There will also be a short video clip showing a brief demonstration of how to plant the seed paper pouches directly into the soil, emphasizing the care and nurturing required for the seeds to germinate and grow. Students will also disseminate the message about sustainable packaging and its benefits.  The money collected will be donated to an animal sanctuary in Malta.

Through this week-long project, students will not only gain hands-on experience in creating sustainable packaging but also develop a deeper understanding of the significance of environmental sustainability and
the role they can play in preserving the planet.  They will also understand  the importance of selecting native or adaptive seeds for Malta to promote local biodiversity.

Following this event we will have time for reflection and feedback.  Facilitate a discussion to gather feedback from students about their experience with the project and the impact of the seed paper packaging initiative. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the importance of sustainable practices and their role in promoting environmental conservation and awareness.
