Belfast City Council provides a container at our 4 Recycling Centres for people to dispose of their used glasses (spectacles) and cases. Many people wear their glasses for a year or 2 at a time, and replace them quite regularly, and dispose of the old ones in their bin. Our charity partner for this scheme is Newcastle Lions Club whose partners in developing countries repair and distribute the glasses to people who need them. This is a wonderful way to keep useful items from ending up in landfill. In 2022, over 2000 pairs of glasses were collected from our sites and almost 300 pairs that were not suitable for reuse, were sent for recycling.
