To reduce and eliminate the need for single-use plastic bags.
• WHAT will be done
Description:
According to the National Statistics Office, the total number of households in 2017 amounted to 180,054. If just half of the households purchase fresh bread in a single-use plastic bag every day, the result is 131 tonnes of plastic in our landfills and seas – every year.
Our EWWR action is divided into three parts;
1. Creating a reusable bread bag:
We have produced a bag suitable for bread. During this process, we have taken local bread sizes into consideration. The aim of the design was to make a stylish product to encourage consumers to use the bag. The material used to create the product is 100% RPET in order to continue reducing plastic from landfills. The material is also breathable and freezer-proof which in turn should also help to reduce food waste. We believe that all of the above make for a convenient alternative to single-use plastic bags when shopping for bread.
2. Supermarket Visits:
We will be visiting supermarkets and bakeries across the Maltese Islands to show shoppers how convenient it is to opt for reusable products. We plan to encourage people to refuse single-use plastic bags and inform them on the consequences that plastic has on our environment and future. We will also be offering free samples to customers.
3. Spreading the word:
We will be using our social media platforms to help spread the word and increase awareness by creating a post for everyday during EWWR which will be posted on Facebook and Instagram. We will also be creating a blog post with information and statistics on the use of single-use plastic.
