Waste-Free Living Movement of Kadıköy Municipality – The Campaign of Reducing of Single-Use Plastics
• WHAT will be done
Description:
As Kadıköy Municipality, we have been carrying out effective collection activities for the reduction of all kinds of waste at source and recycling since 2000.
In addition to our waste collection services, in 2020, we initiated the project of “Waste-Free Living Movement” which is essential for our future.
With this project, we have been taking innovative steps to prevent waste generation, ensure to keep the value of waste since its generation and to recycle it if possible. Shop (Waste-Free Shop), Mobile (providing periodical waste collection service at 29 points within the district by mobile vehicles), Street (Waste-Free Living Street) and Reduction of Single Use Plastics are the major steps of our movement.
Following its Waste-Free Living Movement, Kadıköy Municipality has set targets for the Reduction of Disposable Plastics specific to European Waste Reduction Week. In line with these targets and participation principles, it has initiated an active study within which different disciplines come together in order to create a high level of awareness on waste reduction and waste-free living.
In this regard, we came together and exchanged ideas with some popular people on social media known by their support to Waste-Free Lifestyles, set achievable targets based on our field surveys, and prepared visual design materials to increase the visibility of our action in EWWR.
Through social media channels, online interviews and active field surveys during the European Waste Reduction Week 2020, we aim to raise the awareness of 1000 individuals on waste and waste reduction, to ensure the participation of at least 10 cafes in the waste reduction campaign, to prevent the utilization of 1200 single-use plastics within the campaign, to save and recycle 2000 glass bottles.
The collection activities of organic waste generated within the Kadıköy District will start with European Waste Reduction Week, and approximately 50 kg of coffee and tea grounds will be converted into compost with the appropriate sustainable waste collection system.
