• WHAT will be done
Description:
18th November: Minister for Gozo – Dr Justyne Caruana, will attend our school to inaugurate a newly installed Reverse Osmosis to eliminate the use of plastic bottles.
19th November: Clean Up Day around the village of Xewkija & a talk will follow to make children aware of the damage that waste is creating in our environment.
20th November: A person from the Wasteserv in Xewkija will do an eduactional talk at our school where children are grouped according to their age.
21st November: Hands on activity by Ms. Carmen Caruana – using empty detergent bottles instead of pots to plant new plants.
22nd November: Educational visit to Wasteserv in Xewkija for years 1,2 and 3 – to see the benefits of waste separation.
During the EWWR children will be receiving a stainless steel bottle per child to eliminate completely the use of single use plastic bottles.
A new project will start where ‘green wardens’ (students) will do spot checks in classes to check if lights are on while children are playing outside, if waste is separated correctly, if children’s lunches include stretch and seal or foil and if there are any single use plastic bottles. Children will stick a red cross or a green tick according to the result on the class notice board and will stay there until the next spot check which will be on a weekly basis. This will continue also after the EWWR.
Another project is our ‘Stars Club’ that consists of daily discussions with different classes about our environment. This is coordinated by our School Deputy Head Ms. Galea and enhances children’s knowledge about what is happening around us. A handout is given to every student where they have to list down what is being thrown away at home. The objective being to reach the community.
Friday Green Assemblies – every Friday the assembly will be about the environment where an educational message and video clips are presented and discussed with the students through dialogues, show and tell and games.
