Be part of the solution, not the pollution

WHAT will be done

Description:

Cardboard boxes are frequently used to package items due to their versatility. However, due to its popularity, it makes up a large portion of waste and is a resource-intensive product which requires large amounts of water and energy to produce.

Our school is surrounded by numerous shops, therefore, as part of the EWWR, we will be asking them to give us any cardboard which they would be throwing away. From the cardboard boxes collected, the EkoSkola students will be using them to create festive decorations to decorate the school. The Art teachers will also be using the cardboard for any projects that they will be having throughout the year. We will also be speaking to these shops and encouraging them to recycle the cardboard and even reuse the boxes as that way the amount of waste in the landfill is reduced and resources and energy are conserved. In order to create more awareness about how much waste cardboard boxes create; a baled box will be placed in the school ground throughout the EWWR campaign. The extra cardboard will be given to Klabb 3 to 16, so that they can be used by playworkers instead of cardboard paper.

As a school, during the EWWR, we will also be raising awareness through talks by WasteServ representatives, videos as well as posters about the importance of adopting strategies which help to minimise waste. The posters will be created by students and will include tips on how they can reduce packaging when shopping and in their everyday lives. During form time, that week the students will also tackle the issue of packaging and come up with ways on how they can reduce packaging in their life. They will then write these down on a piece of paper and sign a pledge card to show their commitment.  A diary will be given to the students so that they can think and reflect on the amount of packaging that they use throughout the week and it’s type. A before-and-after approach will be adopted for this in order to measure the intended results.

In order to make sure that everyone can contribute to this campaign a competition will be organised for students, whereby they will be encouraged to create a poster with a message on reducing packaging waste. The best three posters will be given a prize.
