Jump The Hedges – Bags made from waste
• WHAT will be done
Description:
Jump The Hedges is a sustainable design studio based in Belfast. The focus of the studio is the development of sustainable activism and environmental awareness. We use 3 main focus areas to achieve our goals; education, community and design. Through education we work with local schools to deliver creative art workshops that focus on environmental awareness and waste reduction. Working with community we deliver events and workshops that focus on sustainable awareness and ‘craftivism’; the act of creating craft from waste materials whilst discussing sustainable activism. We achieve our design goal by operating as a bag making studio, creating bags from waste material such as truck tarpaulin, aeroplane seats and waste life raft material. The process of sourcing, cleaning, cutting and designing with the material is all clearly explained to the consumer encouraging consumer activism. The whole process is totally transparent and all materials are sourced in northern Ireland. To date over 15 40 foot tarps have been saved from landfill and repurposed as bags.
